I have tried to convince people (Indians and some Chinese) to join IV. People don't. They don't believe IV has the capability to get anything done. A lot of people don't care if IV existed or not. They believe that Congress will get to it when it deems right. Core members were asking a few weeks ago if that is the message people are sending. Yes it is.
Yeah. We know that. A lot of people think IV cannot get anything done. IV never promised that we will cause CIR to happen. We never promised that we will cause SKIL to happen. They all happen, mostly on their own. IV's role is to add amendments when they come and remove provisions that hurt us. We did that successfully last year by getting the hard country cap removed. No one else was interested in removing the hard cap. It took a lot of co-ordination and lot of trips and lot of hard work to get it done. If that harmful provision had stayed, then the new quota of 650,000 in S 2611 would have been useless. People forget achivements of IV or think that it was negligible. Retrogression would have been exacerbated with hard country cap.
And this year, if CIR or SKIL bill come, we will be able to achive much much more. We are in much better shape and its hard for me to convince you of that unless I divulge details. That I cannot do. Its up to you if you can trust IV core on that.

And if you want to be in IV core, then you have to call us on the phone number listed and we can see if you can add any value to core by doing things we routinely do, like content prep, website maint, travelling to DC for meetings, talking to other orgs etc. If you are up to the job, sure, why not. The same thing that has caused us to fail last year, the same thing that caused industry to fail in getting H1 quota raised, the same thing that caused failure of Universities to get F4 visa for masters degree holders. And these guys have lobbying budget in millions? Why do you think they failed?
Whatever caused their failure, caused our failure too. In DC, issues are not debated and legislated based on morality and merits of those issues. They are taken up based on contemporary politics and other factors like lobbying, public attention, elections and political parties.
For example: Last year, they debated a constitutional amendment to ban flag burned in USA. And spent precious time of congress on debating it. How to you think that would have helped anyone? Even it had passed, what was the merit of the issue? Flag burned mostly happens outside USA. In USA people rarely burn US flags. So banning flag burning in USA is like banning metric system. Its meaningless. Yet, they spent time on it.
Read papers, read articles from other lobbying orgs and learn something. Legislations dont happen on their own because the issues carry weight and have merits. Merits have nothing to do with congressional action.
To quote a bestselling economist Steven Levitt :
"If morality is how we would like the world to work, economy is how the world actually works".

I think there is another issue here. lets say you file for your 485 and you get married later in teh year..by that if PD retregresses again, your spouse wont be able to file for 485, since she gets your PD. so you might get approved sometime next year and you will loose your h1b status, then it gets to be a problem for the spouse since she is still waiting for PD to retrogress..so please talk to a lawyer and get all the facts...

For all the non-financial enginners who are trying to make sense of financial jargons (like myself - no financial enginnering degree for me but I have worked as a quant for some time in between):
Any time you are trading something - you are betting on the direction of "something". Smisachu - with his statistical arbitrage background - would probably like to vehemently disagree at this point. But please hear me out first.
If you are buying a stock - you are betting that the price of the stock will increase. If you are not sure whether prices will increase or decrease - but still sense some bubble forming, then you know that at the top of the bubble and duing the bust phase - the volatility goes through the roof. Maybe it is time for some option trading to trade on the volatility. So you are now trading on the volatility instead of the price.
If you become even more of a pro option trader - and you think that the market always undervalues out of money options (because human brain is not capable of anticipating the "black swan" events) - then you will buy out of the money options for pennies and will hope that you "poo like a chicken and eat like an elephant". The directional bet you are taking in this case is again on the vol increasing over a longer period of time.
If you are into statistical arbitrage - you have your own gold standard, usually some mathematical model, of how a specific market should be priced. If the market price differs from this - then you enter into a trade to make money when eventually this anomaly reverses.
Volatility is the second order "statistical moment" of the price. These, and other derived quantities (are usually termed as greeks in the trading perlance) - but if you are good in statistics - then you could think of all of them as statistical moments and formulate your whole mathematical model on that. There are ways you can formulate strateties to trade even higher order derivatives.
The basic fact that you are betting on the direction of "something" is often lost on even some professional traders - leading to some wonderful illusions of risk free return (like perpetual motion machine).
To be fair - there are some trading strategies which appear very simple and intuitively appealing - yet produce extremely complex mathematical results when you try to find out exactly which "something" you are taking a directional bet on.
So if you want to trade - I think a good idea is to first find out what is this "something" that you will like to bet on. Alternatively, if you have any strategy - please first understand what kind of direction bet you are taking - and the risks associated with it.

Moderators, do you think it's possible to issue an email receipt to contributors? I donated $250 so far and the first $100 was done through my bank billpay.. However, the online billpay deducted the amount right away, and it didn't give me any indication whether the check was actually endorsed by the intended recipient on the supposed delivery date.. Worrying about that, I sent in my second contribution via paypal.
Writing an actual paper check, I would see a copy of endorsement online, or using paypal I would know it's cashed out via email. But this is not the case with my bank's (bank of america) online billpay. Thanks!

I have been a IV member since 2006 . I have seen the ups/downs . donated money , sent letters , attended rallies and done whatever has been been proposed . But I see that many senior members who had the drive to motivate people are not sending or being part of any messages or threads at all and that is exactly why the movement seems to be losing steam .
The standard response that I see to any question is "have you donated money ? " . "Don't ask for anything till you have donated. " this is followed by some some red dots which normally works to silence the questions. People will be willing to donate when they believe in the movement . I remember we collected $ 30,000 in 1 month before the rally there was huge thread with all the donations . People were charged up and the money came up automatically . I am willing to donate but to be brutally honest I do not see the same level of motivation as was there in 2006 / 2007 days .Please use this as a wakeup call and not as reason to vent your frustration on me .
There are many senior members who I do not even see any more . Members joining in late 2007 or early 2008 will not know any of these guys .
Aman Kapoor . He is the founder of IV . I have not seen his messages since the past 3 years almost . Where is he ? Is it too much for him to send a greeting in New years eve motivating the members ? It takes just 2 minutes .
Mark Bartosik :- He was supposed to the spokesperson for IV .The guy with the MasterCard sign for immigration . I have not seen him for quite some time now
Where are the other senior leaders like
a) Walden Pond
b) There was a this British Girl from San Jose ( had a handle which had name like Rose or something )
c) Niloufer Bustani from Dallas. I see her once in a while but very sparingly .
The others even I have forgotten completely.
The only leadership/core that I see is Pappu and no one else . If you have a country where the prime minister shows his face only once in 4 years , how are the people supposed to believe in that movement ? Please don't reply with a message saying what have I done or why can't I contribute money ? I have done that I am looking for leadership to show us the way and motivate us . All campaigns don't need money donations( Letters , calls , faxes etc ) . We could start with that and then drum up support and momentum and then the money will start flowing in automatically . There has to be a synchronized campaign organized by the leadership and all I see is everybody putting their eggs in the basket called spillover.

Aman Kapoor or Waldenpond- IV founder is very much active and working hard on this mission despite having his greencard. We have regular daily discussions as a team and he is one person I have seen who sleeps, drinks and live this effort all the time. He has spent his personal money to travel to DC and still takes time off from work to travel to DC on regular basis. Likewise there are others who are committed to this effort and are working hard on the tasks assigned to them. You see me most of the time writing on the forum because in the core team, this is the task assigned to me. I communicate with members. If we have everyone posting on the forum, it will not be a good use of our limited time off work on daily basis. Also know that IV is not forums. Just by writing on the forums, nothing ever gets done on the hill. There are several tasks that we have to do in this advocacy effort to get something done. You can see more regular updates on the donor forum on what we do behind the scenes. It takes lot of effort, commitment and patience to be active in this effort because results are not immediate or guaranteed. But with our efforts we have have had our successes and we are positive about the future successes. The key is to be consistent, persistent and passionate about this advocacy work. We need to understand that we as an organization represent hundreds of thousands of people suffering due to the broken immigration system despite following all the rules and being legal in this country. This long wait has caused lot of pain and suffereing in people's lives and careers. Everyday we feel the pressure of hopes of thousands of our members who look upto us with some ray of light. As leaders of this organization we carry this responsibility bravely every day on our shoulders and feel motivated from the support of our members and the passion we have for this cause.

Finally, Thank you for your smart and intelligent attempt to dilute the members' focus. First you start off by saying that we have no allegiance to our home land and finally you deduce that country caps are OK.

I am on h1b since 2004. i knew we have too many people whose sole aim in life is a American GC. to avoid becoming one of those who check processing dates first thing in morning, i applied for Canadian PR, got it in 8 months and i am not even gonna bother applying for labor, i-140 and all those precious life controlling documents.

This might come as a surprise to some of you, but someone needs to say it out loud. GET A LIFE FOLKS!!!! there is more to life then EB, GC and all. it seem all we desi's can think of is how to get a green card so we can live here with peace and never have to worry bout getting laid off or anything.

4) Considering the number of fraud's committed by Indian body shoppers and people who use them, i am not surprised USCIS is extra careful when it comes to Indian applications. Anyone who got his wife with no exp with software dev an h1b visa from some cheat in Jersey knows what i am talking bout . My freind got his wife an H1 after showing she knew software testing even though her major was fine arts and all she was good at was web surfing

Did anyone notice that GCTest's only interest was to start a fight between EB2 and EB3 folks.
See how he opened up a thread and threw a match to light the fire so that everyone starts fighting amongst themselves and he did not post again in his own thread .
United we stand and divided we fall. This is true since life started and will be true until the end of time.
You are absolutely right. there is no need to fight we are all in the same pool...There is no EB2/EB3. We are all people who are desperately waiting for our gc's and please we need to work together to have things solved...This post is not helping issues...but making worse.
And for GCtest i think He/She just likes to start a fight and stand back and watch the fun....am I right "GCTEST" ;)
