Based on experience from India:
Errors in Passport and Visa entries are problem getting fixed, and if not fixed, can become cause of problem anytime.
The passport issuing office generally can fix typo error in passport as "observation", which they will write in any other page of passport. Getting fixed in any other passport office (which has not issued it) is a lengthy process.
Myself, family of four had got couple of times Passport entries fixed and Visa entries fixed (between 1992 when I was frequent traveller). Typo errors are common. In case of passport errors they fix as "Observation" on the same passport (passport is not changed). In case of Visa errors, they cancel it and give new.
Obviously, once "observation" is noted in passport, you need to show everywhere that the entries are modified

For us, life revolves around everything immigration. For IOs, its just a job to pay the bills. I wouldnt fault the IO...they are just doing their job & acting according to procedure. How many of us professionals keep track of EVERY SINGLE thing thats related to our industry. So keep that in mind while we criticize USCIS people.
If the company I work at, filed an intellectual bankrupcy and had become a big issue that I have to encounter in my day to day life, I would definitely remember that.

I understand that IV leadership is agains't lawsuits because they take time. However most of the timelines immigration lawsuits are of 1 to 2 years time.

Do we have any updates on where to send the check?
I have one message from Pappu that they have some updates on this. I don't know any details so far. Hopefully we will get some account information soon! If not, we will see how to create a pool account for this and then submit to IV. One thing is for sure, I don't think we can not afford loosing this golden opportunity. I don't want to loose this to bureaucracy.

Following up on my previous post. Here is the format for the ad and the affidavit. We went to the DC embassy to get the name changed and they have next day (business days only) passport-by-mail service. I don't think they have same day service.
Actual correct name: <corr_first_name> <corr_last_name>
Current Name on passport: <first_name_pp>
Name in US docs (Visa, SSN, Drivers Lic.):
<first_name_us> FNU _OR_ <first_name_us> <first_name_us>
Format of the ad we placed in Indian newspaper (TOI) and local US newspaper:
I, <first_name_pp> AKA <first_name_us> FNU AKA <first_name_us> <first_name_us> d/o <dads_name> R/o <indian_address/us_address> have changed my name to <corr_first_name> <corr_last_name>.
Format of Affidavit from India (on Rs. 10 Non Judicial Stamp Paper):
AFFIDAVIT
I, <first_name_pp>, D/o <dads_name>, R/o <indian_address>, do hereby take oath and solemnly declare as under:-

We found out at the embassy that we could have used our India issued marriage certificate (which had my wifes correct name) and avoid doing all this. Placing the ad, getting the affidavit and posting it to US all took a total of 1 week. We went to the DC embassy early on a Friday and we got the passport with the name changed via mail by Monday.
Another friend of mine got the same thing done via the mail-in service. It took him 2 weeks to get the passport back.

My wife's case may or may not be fine. She came on H4 and got her H1 in 2004 but got a project only in the middle of 2005 and the company started paying her only once she was on project. But thats fine. If her 485 gets rejected (although the company not paying her is not really her fault), we'll just pack our bags :) Also, her I-140 is still pending.

Since you're a beneficiary of you're wife's AOS, you're in "pending status of authorized stay". Therefore you *are* authorized to stay here as of that day until a decision on the 485 is made (the unlawful stay clock stops ticking). If you get rejected on your H1 extension, you can still stay in the country and possibly work on the EAD (a derivative benefit of the 485). If you think your wife's 485 is airtight, and there's a problem later you can use the 245(k) provision since you were in unlawful stay for less than 180 days.

Another member from CA has joined this challange. The member has contacted me and I have just now spoken to the member. The member wants to stay as an annonymous donor. Well - I agree. What you say is true. In the past - IV leadership came up with campaigns and with plan and then the heat picked up and members started contributing and working hard and thats how all these campaigns are a success to some extent.
Now when new members are trying to come up with something - I personally feel that IV leadership must either endorse and support and guide or if such new campaigns that are not coming directly from IV core may not be advisable because they may not be the best approach - I think IV core can communicate the concern and intent to not ssupport new campaigns.
If there is no response - it becomes difficult for people to do anything because most people spring into action ONLY when IV core endorses the effort otherwise members will start campaigns - get no support or very little support and the campaigns will just go wasted.
On another note - it is always the best to join State chapters and talk to chapter leads and also mobilize people in state chaapter level - itis not easy but works in long run

I wrote a letter to the university chancellor where I graduated from and urged him to use his power to influence lawmakers to pass STEM -or similar -bills or face the consequences in the form of dwindling enrollment of brilliant students. I used strong but not so harsh words. Refer to the following thread.

I posted the letter and the chancellor's response on this forum only to motivate someone 'higher up' to read it, endorse it and make it an action item for everybody (with a US degree). I feel now that I did my part as a dedicated member but the IV leaders (those who have the authority in IV circle) failed to lead my initiative or take it to a higher level (may be I am not able to find better words here).

Ok, so if I file the i-140/i-485 now and leave the country with a new stamp.
what do you mean by new stamp ? once you apply for I-485 , you need to wait until you get your I-485 reciept# to leave country.
Now, if my I-140 is approved after that, and then my i-485 is looked at after that date, will I considered to be in status then, because when they are looking at the AOS application, I have already left and returned to the country??
I guess you have to get new I-94 and submit that new I-94 to USCIS.
Or should be in status the day the AOS petition is filed and even if i leave/re-enter the country after that, it does not matter?!
I am not sure , gurus please answer this question..Let us know if get any info regarding this because I am in simillar situation.
